What are the benefits of a heat pump?

Although its purchase price is not negligible, a heat pump has undeniable advantages. Precise and reliable, this technology for heating and cooling homes is outclassing traditional systems. This is particularly understandable in regions that annually move from freezing to scorching temperatures, such as in Quebec. Here we have an advanced, efficient, and versatile HVAC system that allows for year-round indoor comfort.

The main advantage of the heat pump: its efficiency

The primary advantage of a heat pump is its energy efficiency. The design and operating logic of these devices mean that in winter, they capture the relative warmth of the outdoor environment (even when it’s cold) and concentrate it inside buildings. In the summer, the heat in the rooms is sucked in, cooled by the heat pump’s refrigerant, and returned to the dwelling.

Because of this operating mode, the energy performance coefficient (EPC) of heat pumps is significantly high. Moreover, with a suitable, quality, and well-installed device, it’s as if your home had free energy! In fact, an EPC of 3.0 — which is standard for a heat pump — means that for one unit of energy consumed by the system (e.g., 1 kWh), it generates three units of heat (or 3.0 kWh). In terms of heating, this results in significantly lower electricity costs for the same level of comfort.

When it comes to lowering the temperature of one or several rooms during the summer, the heat pump also surpasses other technologies in terms of energy efficiency. Furthermore, the heat pump is more eco-friendly than a conventional air conditioner. By essentially only transferring thermal energy, it does not generate additional heat (as air conditioners do) to produce cold.

Home comfort and “green” contribution

In terms of comfort, the heat pump dominates just as much. Humidity in the warm season is evacuated along with the heat. Meanwhile, in the cold season, the indoor air is very little dried out by the produced heat. Consequently, the purchase of a humidifier is not required.

Moreover, by having installed a heat pump, you become eligible for certain tax credits and subsidies as part of government programs related to energy efficiency and climate protection.
