Important: a heat pump that is too small will run constantly at full capacity; one that is too powerful will constantly stop and restart. In both cases, it will wear out prematurely and lead to maintenance costs.

The efficiency of the heat pump and the expected duration of its operation should be considered. Thus, although more expensive, heat pumps with high HSPF (heating) and SEER (air conditioning) ratings will save energy ($) in the long run.
