If you’re interested in purchasing a heat pump, you might be wondering how much it could cost you. First, know that the price can vary from one aerothermal system to another, and there isn’t a “one size fits all” good little heat pump.
Fundamental characteristics rather determine the prices of heat pumps. Of course, your needs and budget are important. But be wary of “incredible offers” or the assumption that high price = superior quality.
Heat Pumps: Price Indicators to Consider
Various factors establish the price of a heat pump. There’s the purpose of the device (air conditioner or heating + air conditioning) and the type of installation. In this respect, mini-split or single-zone wall-mounted heat pumps are supplementary systems suitable for small apartments. They are less expensive than “multi-split” (multi-zone or multi-block) systems, where the external unit is connected to several wall units. Central heat pumps, the most expensive, are integrated into the central (forced air) heating system of houses.
The larger the space to be heated or air-conditioned, the higher and more adequate the power of the heat pump must be, and the higher its price. This power is measured in kW, tons, or more commonly in BTU/h. For example, a living space of 1,200-1,300 sq ft requires a heat pump generating ≈ 24,000 BTU per hour. Mini splits produce from 9,000 to 18,000 BTU/h, with prices ranging from $2,000 to $6,000. Larger systems go up to 60,000 BTU/h and can reach $10,000. Important: a heat pump that is too small will run constantly at full capacity; one that is too powerful will constantly stop and restart. In both cases, it will wear out prematurely and lead to maintenance costs.
Other Important Points
The efficiency of the heat pump and the expected duration of its operation should be considered. Thus, although more expensive, heat pumps with high HSPF (heating) and SEER (air conditioning) ratings will save energy ($) in the long run. It is also necessary to choose an ENERGY STAR certified device with a good warranty. Finally, Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin brands (sold by Gestion Air) are significantly the most reliable. And their average price, between $5,000 and $6,000, compares to market prices.
